This results in a more power and increased reliability with reduced chances of pre-detonation & knock. Intercooler CoreThe most important component of any intercooler is the core. The core cools the charged air from the turbo before it enters the engine and the OEM BMW tube and fin intercooler is designed to support low boost levels and air flow. Once boost levels and air flow are increased, the OEM unit is easily overwhelmed and can not keep up with the cooling demands of a tune running more than OEM boost levels. This results in heat soak which will result in a power loss and a higher potential for pre-detonation in the upper RPM range. We remedy this problem with our custom bar and plate cores which utilizes a staggered and offset high density internal and external fin pack. Our cores have been carefully tuned to provide the the best intake temperature reduction while maintaining minimal pressure drop. Our bar & plate core is also much more durable than the OEM tube and fin core, with a better ability to withstand rocks and other debris. The VRSF 5″ Performance HD is the best option available for stock turbo N54 and N55’s on the market. The 5″ features a much denser fin pack both internally and externally than comparable options. The stock BMW intercooler rises about 32 degrees during a 3rd gear pull whereas it’s not uncommon to see intake temperatures stay even at the end of a 3rd gear pull with the VRSF 5″ Performance due to the larger overall surface area. The VRSF 7.5″ Competition HD FMIC utilizes the largest core of any 7″ intercooler available and is the best performing 7″ intercooler in it’s class. More importantly, the proprietary VRSF core offers a much denser, high destiny fin pack both internally and externally which translates to better heat absorption internally as well as heat dissipation externally without compromising airflow. Again, the OEM intercooler rises 32 degrees during a 3rd gear pull whereas it’s not uncommon to see intake temperatures drop at the end of a multiple gear pull due to the Competition HDs larger overall surface area. InstallationThe 7.5″ Competition HD intercooler kit includes everything you’ll need to replace your OEM intercooler with our upgraded kit. Due to the larger over all size of the size of the 7.5″ intercooler, the black plastic shroud does need to be trimmed. Also note that the bumper cover does not require trimming or removal for installation. The 5″ intercooler kit also includes everything necessary to replace your OEM FMIC (front mount intercooler) with our upgraded kit. This is a bolt on intercooler which means it doesn’t require permanent modification in order to be installed. Also note that removal of the bumper is not required for installation. Each VRSF intercooler is hand finished and pressure tested to ensure a high quality, leak free experience. As seen in the logs below, the VRSF Race core offers a significant improvement over the OEM by keeping temperatures closer to ambient. In the example below we show a F30 335i on a 75 degree day. Our intercooler maintains a safe temperature through the 2nd through 4th gear pull, starting at 89 degrees and ending at 86 degrees. Finish & Construction Our VRSF intercooler features 3D CAD designed cast aluminum end tanks for improved flow in comparison to sheet metal end tanks. Our CNC’d, one piece seamless cast end tanks are also more durable than comparable sheet metal or multiple piece end tanks.
